| Summary: | Transformation of Testimony: Dalia Grinkevičiūtėʼs Memoirs “Lietuviai prie Laptevų jūros” (“Lithuanians by the Laptev Sea”) and Rūta Šepetysʼ Novel “Between Shades of Grey” This research examines two pieces – Siberian memoirs Lithuanians by the Laptev Sea written by Lithuanian deportee Dalia Grinkevičiūtė and novel Between Shades of Grey by American author Rūta Šepetys. The basis of this comparison is the same topics (the reflection of exile), plot similarities (a story of an adolescent girl in the Gulag camps) and the position of both protagonists. It can be affirmed that Šepetys uses Grinkevičiūtė’s testimony’s material for Between Shades of Grey. The objective of this study is to reveal how contemporary novel transforms the word of memoirs, how different both authors communicate parallel situations. It is implemented by comparing particular episodes, structure and style. Together with the analysis of the organization of the texts, it is explained how atrocious reality of the camps breaks the identity. The research is based on the theories of collective memory, trauma researches and its consequences for an individual and all the community. The thesis concludes with the confirmations that the novel of Šepetys is monosemantic and continuous; it is constructed by traditional narrative techniques and suggests specific interpretation. Between Shades of Grey adapts the needs of adolescents, visual elements, close structure, omniscient narrator and traditional methods of descriptions suit expectations of popular literature readers. The word of Grinkevičiūtė is polyphonic and it does not suggest easy reception, requires effort from the reader. Deep meanings are hided in the aposiopesis, irony and grotesque of the narrator and implications. Although the critique of Lithuanians by the Laptev Sea is rich, there are no many careful analysis of Šepetys’ novel and no comparative reviews of these both texts. |
