Description
Summary:Artificial breeding of the Atlantic salmon is a complex technological process involving subsequent developmental stages of the fish -from fertilization to a fully developed organism (i.e. maturation of the gametes, artificial fertilization, formation of a new organism, its development and growth, sexual differentiation and physiological adaptations to the marine environment, etc.). This process consists of five main interrelated stages: 1 - the selection of the brood-stock, II - incubation of eggs, III - raising of the free embryos, IV - raising of the fry, V - raising of parr and smolts. All the stages are described in this work. The evaluation methods of biological characteristics of the reproducers, eggs, free embryos and fry are presented. Main diseases and their causes as well as the methods of prevention of their spread are also described. Main disturbances of the breeding process are given with the possible outcomes. Biologically correct use of the breeding techniques is essential for every stage of the organism development, irrespective of their duration in respect to the whole length of the breeding process.
