Description
Summary:This study presents data on morphometric characteristics of wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout individuals used as brood stock in Žeimena Salmon Hatchery. 2002-2003 year-samples of both species were subdivided into two groups according to their capture sites: Ž - the Seimena and the Neris rivers; P - the lower reaches of the Nemunas River, the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. The year 2004 sample constituted the third group B - mixed stock of the Neris and Nemunas rivers, the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. The fork length, body mass prior to (Q1) and after the egg stripping (Q2) and sex ratio have been measured in each sample as well as in pooled samples. The relative fecundity was assessed for year 2002 samples. The pooled sample of salmon consisted of 65% females and 35% males. In the sea trout total sample females made up 88 percent, males - 12 percent of the total number. The highest number of salmon was caught in 2002, the lowest - in 2004. The highest sea trout catch rates were noticed in 2003 and the lowest - in 2002. The relative fecundity was higher in Ž group females of both salmon and sea trout compared to P group. The adverse captivity conditions in old hatchery facilities had the negative effect on the maturation course and the quality of eggs and sperm in all groups of both species.
