Description
Summary:The coastal fish monitoring has been carried out in the Lithuanian zone of the Baltic Sea in the area north to Palanga since 2000. Investigations were conducted annually by using gill-net series in fixed sites in July-August. 16 fish species were caught according to the monitoring programme. The diadromous vimba Vimba vimba (L.), marine species Baltic herring Clupea harengus membras L. and river flounder Platichthys flesus (L.) dominated in the coastal areas. Considerable changes of fish species composition, abundance and biomass were noted comparing the experimental catches in different years. Catches of typical coastal fish species in experimental gear were considerably higher compared to the recent years, e.g. the abundance of turbot Psetta maxima (L.) and river flounder was declining in catches as the result of more intensive coastal fishery. Meanwhile, the catches of freshwater and diadromous fish species, such as perch Perca fluviatilis L., pikeperch Sander lucioperca (L.), vimba and Alosa fallax fallax (Lacépède) were increasing.
