Description
Summary:In the Viešvilė Strict Nature Reserve, 851 small mammals representing 13 species were trapped during research carried out in 1991-2001. Clethrionomys glareolus dominated among them and comprised 41.2% of all individuals caught. Sorex araneus (17.5% of all individuals caught), Sorex minutus (11.9%), Microtus oeconomus (8.8%), Apodemus flavicollis (6.5%) and Microtus agrestis (6.5%) were the other common species. Neomys fodiens, Sicista betulina, Mus musculus, Apodemus agrarius, Micromys minutus, Arvicola terrestris, Microtus arvalis were rather rare species in the reserve. The largest number ofspecies and the highest values of Shannon's diversity index were found in bogs (11 species; H = 2.52-2.81) and meadows (10 species; H =2.24-2.63). These indices were lower in forests (8 species; H =1.43-1.64) and half-open biotopes (6 species; H =2.27). S. araneus and S. minutus were dominant species in bogs, S. araneus, S. minutus and M. oeconomus - in meadows. C. glareolus was absolutely dominant in forests. According to Shannon's diversity index (H = 2.89, data from monitoring sites are not included), diversity of small mammals in the Viešvilė Strict Nature Reserve is one of the highest in Lithuania.
