Description
Summary:Rates of permafrost formation and thaw, entailed by Pleistocene climate, and their influence on groundwater formation in the Lithuanian territory have been evaluated. The potential thickness of cryolithic zones (from 100 to 450 m) and duaration of permafrost and thaw under the glacier (2000-20000 years) have been estimated basing on analitical calculations, modelling of heat conduction in the glacier and saturated rocks, and some presumptions, simplifying the process of probable formation conditions of groundwater dynamics (preglacial cooling of climate and permafrost aggradation, degradation of permafrost from below due to geothermal heat flow under the glaciers of different thickness have been reconstructed). It has been determined that during the degradation of cryolithic zone from below the groundwater could have passed gravitational (free surface) regime. A possible consequence was an untypical location of groundwater recharge areas.
