Description
Summary:The analysis showed that NAO index is the best temperature indicator in Lithuania during cold season, except November, and a fairly good indicator of precipitation for January-March. CPC NAO also exhibits temperature dependence on westerly flow over Atlantic, especially in March. It represents precipitation only in positive phase and only for DJFM season. Conversely АО index becomes significant for precipitation in its negative phase and for January-February season. Also this index gives the largest temperature anomalies for the same season. In general, the combination of these indices could be a very useful tool for Lithuanian climate diagnostics in winter. Although there are several seasons when all indices are in phase and amount extreme values but temperature or precipitation anomalies obtain opposite sign in Lithuania. Such cases usually develop under continental blocking (positive phase) or steady eddies in the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea (negative phase) conditions.
