Description
Summary:Soviet Repressions and Deportations in Panevėžys District in 1940-1941. There has been little research to date on the subjects of Sovietization, industrial nationalization, deportations and repressions in Panevėžys County during 1940-1941 specifically. Therefore the object of this research was Sovietization process of Panevėžys County which has lead to repressions and deportations during years 1940-1941. More than 100 private houses and 25 industrial enterprises that had 1 400 employees were nationalized. The number of arrested people in Panevėžys was smaller compared to Kaunas. The education system was reformed according to Soviet model. NKVD persecuted members of anti-Soviet organizations and arrested them. Deportations usually followed. The deportations during June of 1941 were not impulsive, but thorough and rigorously planned by soviet intelligence for ensuring the removal of so called “anti-Soviet element”. In Panevėžys district the deportees were exiled from three train stations: Panevėžio, Labos and Subačiaus. The criteria of selection for „anti-Soviet elements“ was not clear. Among the deportees there were supporters of communist regime too. 603 people were deported from Panevėžys city and County, but excluding some men who were deported to forced labour camps, 528 were deported to Siberia in total. Most of them were farmers and teachers. Total number of deportees in Lithuania was 17 485. The most dangerous men according to Soviet intelligence were separated from their families to other wagons and deported to forced labour camps. These amounted to about 10% of arrested men in Panevėžys, which is a lot smaller part when compared with Kaunas or Vilnius. The deportees from Panevėžys were mainly Lithuanians and Jews. The deportees were directed to Altai region, but in summer of 1942 the larger part of the exiles were moved to Yakutia. The exiles were dislocated at the delta of Lena river, in largely uninhabited islands.
