Summary:Hægt er að lesa greinina í heild sinni með því að smella á hlekkinn View/Open The purpose of this article is to describe the historical development over the past seventy years, regarding the sexual discourses manifested in Icelandic and international literature. The developmental history has been classified into four periods, extending from silence to knowledge. Previously, ignorance and prejudism regarding sexuality were common. Discussion about sexuality was prohibited and it was considered immoral to provide information about sexuality matters. Sexuality education was believed to lead to sexual fallacy. During 1935-1975 physicians were the only health care professionals in Iceland who legally were allowed to inform people about contraceptive methods. Internationally there has been limited emphasis on sexual health over the most part of the last century but the focus has predominantly been on fertility and childbearing. The definitions of the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding family planning and reproductive health support this understanding. The discourse on sexualand reproductive health created more balanced emphasis on sexual health and reproductive health. After oral contraception was introduced around 1960 sexuality has increasingly been. regarded as a pleasureable experience, without considering procreation. About thirty years ago, the WHO developed a definition of sexual health and thereby emphasized the healthy aspect of sexuality. In the year 2000 a new definition of sexual health was developed with different emphases. This definition provided a broader understanding of sexual health than previously had been done. The promotion of sexual health n eeds to be based on this broad understanding.
