Description
Summary:Hægt er að lesa greinina í heild sinni með því að smella á hlekkinn View/Open A descriptive study was conducted on the important needs of parents whose children are hospitalized and to what extent these needs are met. Participants were 205 parents from three inpatients pediatric units and one outpatient pediatric unit at the Childrens’ Hospital, Landspítali-University Hospital. The majority of the participants were mothers (83%), married or cohabiting (86%), living close enough to the hospital to be able to drive in every day. The majority of the parents considered their child´s illness which led to the hospitalization seious or very serious. Results indicated that the majority of the most important parental needs were met fully or to some extent. However, a few of the needs were perceived as not met at all by at least 20% of the parents. These needs refer to: receiving written information about the child; being able to meet other parents with similar experience; facilities for parents in the unit; opportunities for parents to discuss how they feel; having a person in the unit to care about parental needs; and, the follow-up of the child after discharge. In all instances the majority of the parents felt that the hospital should help them meet their needs. An attempt is made to evaluate the care provided to the parents by calcutating the ratio of the mean importance score and mean score of need met for each need. The findings of this study indicate that parental needs in pediatric units are met to a large extent. However, for a group of parents, a number of important needs are not met at all. Suggestions for improvement are proposed.
