Description
Summary:Neðst á síðunni er hægt að nálgast greinina í heild sinni með því að smella á hlekkinn View/Open Objective. Prevalence, effect, and implications of domestic violence are not well known in Iceland. The study reported aimed at studying children’s general knowledge and understanding of violence at home. It provides an opportunity for comparing results with an English and a Swiss study with the same design. Participants and method. A survey was conducted in 13 schools in Iceland. 563 children 9-12 years old and 562 young people 13-16 years of age participated, 72,8% of parents consented and response rate was 68,4%. Results. 70% of children 9-12 years old and 94% of young people 13-16 years of age report that they know the concept “domestic violence“ which is a higher prevalence than in a comparable English study. Respondents have most commonly heard about "domestic violence" on TV or in school. Girls are more knowledgable than boys and answer more accurately. Around 47% of the children and 72% of the young people define the concept "domestic violence", most commonly by identifying a child as a victim. A little less than a quarter of the participants reports to know someone subjected to violence at home which is similar to comparable English and Swiss results while 15% choose the option "don’t wish to tell". Discussion. Many participants are familiar with the term "domestic violence". The results convey messages to schools, massmedia and professionals to engage actively in education on this serious subject. Few respondents have heard about “domestic violence“ from parents; more discussion is needed on this serious matter among families. Tilgangur. Útbreiðsla, áhrif og afleiðingar ofbeldis á heimilum á börn og fullorðna eru lítt þekkt hér á landi. Tilgangur athugunarinnar, sem þessi grein byggist á, var að rannsaka almenna þekkingu og skilning barna á ofbeldi á heimilum í almennu þýði. Rannsóknin gefur möguleika á samanburði við breska og svissneska athugun. Þátttakendur og aðferð. Tveir staðfærðir spurningalistar ...
