Summary: | Centrocestus formosanus has harmful and sometimes lethal effects on fishes This digenean, originally from Southeast Asia, now occurs in freshwater systems on all continents except Africa and Antarctica. This chapter outlines the C. formosanus life cycle, pathogenic effects on its first intermediate, second intermediate and definitive hosts, parasite zoogeography (based on published records), and efficacy for control and eradication. The goal of this chapter is to generate awareness and perhaps instigate monitoring for the presence of this pathogen by biologists, fisheries managers, and other stake-holders of aquatic systems whose biodiversity are vital for economic, ecological and social well-being.
