Gizzard Analysis for Lead Ingestion by Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) and Mallard Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) to Evaluate the Potentially Beneficial Effects on Populations of the Conversion from Lead to Steel Shotgun loads in Waterfowl Hunting Areas

Summary: | vi, 40 p. Gizzards of 1724 Canada geese and 291 Mallard ducks were collected during the 1977, 1978 and 1979 waterfowl hunting seasons in Allegan County and surrounding areas. The gizzards were analyzed to provide a base line for the amount of lead and steel shot ingested in the Allegan County populations of Canada geese and Mallard ducks. Ingestion ranged from 1.46% to 4.44% of the Canada goose population with a greater percentage of steel ingested. In Mallard ducks, ingestion fanged from 0.00% to 7.62% of the population with a greater percentage of lead ingested. |
