Summary: | This article is intended to provide information on the adaptation process affecting the missions and functions of the Argentine Naval Prefecture in a context of intensified repressive policies implemented by the Argentine State in the first half of the 1970s. The time frame observed in this work constitutes a moment of profound tension between the State’s defense and security functions and its intervention and the internal social scenario. Hence, it reconstructs and analyzes the processes of conformation and adaptation of delegations and sections dedicated to intelligence functions in a period including the final moments of the dictatorship —the self-proclaimed “Argentine Revolution” (1966-1973)— and the third experience of Peronism in government until the military coup of 1976. To this end, it analyzes a series of communications, directives and instructions from the archives of the Information Service of the "North Atlantic Zone" Argentine Prefecture. This paper seeks, thus, to shed light on practical instances of the training of prefects in intelligence matters and report a series of bureaucratic procedures aimed at increasing the state presence for control and surveillance matters. The directives, orders and instructions analyzed here conform a universe of institutional resources meant to provide intelligence officers with tools, doctrinal elements and key knowledge. Furthermore, they reveal a process of communicational transmission, bringing theory and practice closer together. To this end, the bureaucratic genealogy of institutional efforts aimed at turning a security force dedicated to the custody of maritime and navigable borders into a tool for personal identification and population control will be reconstructed.
