Description
Summary:Hypertension is a prevalent condition worldwide, and natural alternatives for its management are constantly sought. The aim of the study was to evaluate the hypotensive effect of Linum usitatissimum(LU) flour compared to enalapril in Rattus rattus var. albinus. This was a preclinical experimental study, conducted on three groups of 5 rats with 200mg/Kg/day of LU (group 1), 10mg/Kg/day of enalapril (group 2), and distilled water (group 3). Systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured at baseline, on the fifth and seventh day (mmHg). Means were compared using Student's t-test and ANOVA. In group 1: the baseline SBP was 173.8; 56.4 (p=0.148) on the fifth day and 136.6 (p=0.021) on the seventh day. The baseline DBP in group 1 was 122.2; 120.2 (p=0.713) on the fifth day and 107.2 (p=0.105) on the seventh day. The comparison of the means of the differences on the fifth day showed that the effect of group 1 on SBP and DBP was less than that of group 2. It is concluded that linseed flour has a slight systolic hypotensive effect in Rattus rattus var. albinus, but less than enalapril.
