| Summary: | Vaccination of domiciled dogs not only protects the animal as an individual but also benefits the population of animals and humans by reducing zoonoses. Active and passive immunization is essential to ensure the organism's defense against various pathogens throughout the animal's life. There are several vaccines available in the market, but the selection of the best protocol is up to the veterinarian, who should prioritize essential vaccines, although non-essential ones may be important in some regions. It is recommended not to exceed the number of doses and the amount of vaccines administered (avoiding non-recommended ones). Since the main contagious diseases in dogs can be fatal, prevention is crucial. Although immunization should follow global guidelines and the research of opinion leaders, local laws and limited resources can make it difficult to apply them. The objective of this literature review is to analyze the information on the most current study of vaccination of domesticated adult dogs. The research method used to achieve the objective of this study was through articles and books found in databases, where the selected information was interpreted and organized. This work made it possible to reflect on the challenges that veterinarians face in establishing the ideal vaccination protocol, and changes are needed in this regard. Continuing education for professionals in the field needs to be more present, as well as monitoring irregularities. Finally, awareness of owners will always be the best way to reduce the number of diseases that infect dogs.
