Description
Summary:ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE SOVIET GEOLOGY IN ASSURING MINERAL BASIS FOR NONMETALLIC MINING INDUSTRYSummaryBefore the Great October Revolution, nonmetallic mining industry did not practically exist in Russia. Thus, knowledge of mineral resources was also extremely low.Geological-research works carried out after the revolution allowed us to discover huge nonmetallic mineral resources in the country. In this respect, the Soviet Union became one of the richest countries in the world. To the most important nonmetallic mineral resources here considered belong phosphate minerals, potash salts, mica, chrysolite-asbestos, kaoline and others.Discovery of considerably rich apatite-nepheline ore desposit in the area of the Kola peninsula (Khibinogorsk), huge phosphorite basin in Kazakhstan (Karatausk), potash salt deposits at Vierkhnyi Kamsk and in Belorussia, phlogopite deposit at Kovdorsk, as well as large deposits of chrysolite-asbestos, kaoline, graphite and others, belongs to the most important achievements of the Soviet geologists in search for nonmetallic mineral deposits. At present, all kinds of nonmetallic mineral resources useful in industry, cover, in this respect, all demands of national economy. The today's main task of geological survey in the Soviet Union is to improve geographical distribution of the bases of mineral resources and to discover mineral deposits characterized by the most favourable geologic-economical coefficients.
