The article is devoted to the history of the first libraries, appeared at the end of the XIX century at the current territory of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Region, and its activities during the first decade of the XX century. The author presents the list of the most specific reasons for the late appearance of libraries in this northern region of Russia. Also, there is provided the detailed description of the activities of library at Obdorsk Spiritual Mission. В статье представлен экскурс в историю первых библиотек, возникших в конце XIX в. на территории современного Ямало-Ненецкого автономного округа и продолжавших свою деятельность в первое десятилетие ХХ века. Указаны специфические причины позднего развития библиотечного дела в этом регионе, дана подробная характеристика деятельности библиотеки при Обдорской духовной миссии.
