| Summary: | The subject of the article is exoticism as a category of perception of Eastern people by four Polish exiles to Siberia: Maurycy Beniowski, Józef Kopeć, Józef Kowalewski and Agaton Giller, three of whom traveled further to the East, even to China and Japan. In this paper, their travel joudnals and diaries published in 1790-1870 were analyzed. The sphere of reality, which we consider to be exotic, does not have exotic features itself. Exoticism, i.e. the cultural and moral strangeness of indigenous peoples, was subjectively perceived by travelers and described in the category of exoticism - intense interest in unfamiliar life and customs. |
