Summary:The planktonic foraminifera Hantkenina, Globigerapsis and Pseudohastigerina micra are widely distributed throughout the world and their last appearance has generally been considered to mark the top of the Eocene. Hornibrook stated that H. alabamensis, G. index and P. micra make their last appearance in the Runangan Stage, and consequently regarded the Runangan-Whaingaroan boundary as the Eocene-Oligocene boundary in New Zealand.
