Description
Summary:Institute of Marine Research has analysed hydrocarbons (PAH and THC) and brominated flame retardants of PBDE type in sediment cores from 26 locations in the MAREANO area, sampled in 2013 in the Norwegian Sea off the coast of Møre-og-Romsdal and Nord-Trøndelag, and in the Former Disputed Area (FDA) in the Barents Sea. Low levels of hydrocarbons are found in surface sediments at all the locations, corresponding to the Norwegian Environmental Agency’s class I or II for PAH16, with an increase in combustion-related PAH in modern sediment layers at some locations. The incease is attributed to long-range transport of anthropogenic contaminants. In FDA, little sign of anthropogenic PAH is found, but rather high levels of perylene of natural origin. The levels of PBDE in all the samples were low and corresponded to background levels for these compounds
