Description
Summary:In January and February prespawning capelin were distributed east of 35° E between the Skolpen Bank and the Central Bank. It was found in water with temperature from +0.5° to 3.5° C and was in mixture with immature capelin. During the investigation period, the capelin had a slightly movement eastward related to the distribution of the polar front. Along the eastern limit of the distribution, the recordings were overlapped by recordings of polar cod. Since 1969 westerly influxes of capelin have given rise to fishery in late January or early February, but this year no influx towards the coast of West-Finnmark was recorded. The 1969 year-class dominated in the recordings and made up more than 77 % of the spawning stock. It was supported by the 1968 and the 1970 year-classes. Five year old capelin were also found among the immature fish which must be considered as unusual.
