description | Shorebirds are a broad taxa including migratory species that depend on wetlands. The Lagoa do Peixe National Park, Brazil, was created to protect waders and their habitat. The Park Service staff and partners carry out monitoring to support management actions. We processed data from shorebirds censuses conducted in the national park beach and its surroundings from July 2012 to June 2021. We assessed the diversity and abundance of resident and migratory shorebirds, the spatial distribution, trends, and seasonal fluctuations of the species at the site. We analysed data from 439.283 shorebirds comprising four resident species and fourteen migratory species. The most abundant were Calidris alba, Calidris fuscicollis, Haemantopus palliatus and Calidris canutus. The protected area has supported the highest abundance and density of most species. The largest aggregations were recorded in the spring, summer and autumn of each year, corresponding to the migratory passage and wintering of neartic species. Individuals that did not migrate were always recorded in the winter, such as Calidris canutus, Calidris alba and Charadrius semipalmatus. The distribution was related with shorebird reproductive behavior and migratory strategies. There was no trend towards a significant decrease in number of individuals that used the site. The area is an important stopover, wintering and oversummering site and the national park has been effective in its creation purpose. |
