| Summary: | Greinin hefur annars vegar að geyma yfirlit um líf og starf Sigvalda læknis Kaldalóns (1881–1946) sem hefur um áratugaskeið verið talinn eitt ástsælasta tónskáld þjóðarinnar. Í henni er rakið starf hans í Ísafjarðardjúpi, Flatey á Breiðafirði og Grindavík og sýnt hvernig hann lét alls staðar eftir sig óafmáanleg spor í menningarlegu tilliti. Hins vegar er aðalrannsókna-spurning greinarinnar sú hvað textarnir við tónsmíðar hans geti sagt okkur um trú hans og hvernig tengja megi þá lífi hans og starfi. Hinn trúarlegi þáttur í sönglögum tónskáldsins hefur þó oft verið vanræktur þegar fjallað er um þau, séu hin fjölmörgu jólalög undanskilin. Hér er hins vegar sýnt fram á hve stóru hlutverki hinn trúarlegi þáttur gegnir og hvernig þar birtast mjög fjölbreytileg stef kristinnar trúar, ekki síst sköpunartrú, tilbeiðsla og kærleiks-boðskapur en líka harmur. Einnig er sláandi að íslensk þjóðtrú með álfum og huldufólki kemur talsvert við sögu, oft samofin kristnum trúarstefjum.AbstractThis article, “.You are sent by God”: Religious themes of the lyrics of Sigvaldi Kaldslóns’s songs, deals with the life and work of the physician Sigvaldi Kaldalóns (1881–1946) who has for a long time been regarded as one of the most preeminent composers of Iceland even though being mostly self-educated as a musician. His work as a physician in three different parts of the country is discussed. Everywhere that Kaldalóns worked he was admired as a conscientious and dependable physician. But his presence in the districts where he served also brought a cultural awakening. Art and culture would always flourish in his vicinity.AbstractThe main research question of this article, however, asks to what extend the lyrics of his songs can reveal his faith and how it is related to his background. In traditional discussion of Kaldalóns’ songs this question is usually not given much attention except in the context of his numerous Christmas carols.
