Summary:This paper provides the introduction and overview for the special issue “The verb inflections of suffix-dominant languages in East Asia: Focusing on the problem of ‘participle.’”The special issue contains four papers on Sakha, Buryat, Kolyma Yukaghir,and the Hateruma dialect of Yaeyama Ryukyuan, respectively. The four papers analyzethe verb inflection systems and morphology and function of the participles ofeach language. Based on the analysis of the four languages, this paper discusses (1) the characteristicsof participles used as the predicates of main clauses, (2) the functional property of clitics attached to these participles, (3) the functional relationship between these participles and adjectives, and (4) the difference between the participles and deverbal derivatives.
