Description
Summary:This paper consists of two parts. I considered the general tendency of the investigation by J. Ikegami in section 1, and his concrete contribution in the study of Tungusic languages in section 2. In section 1 I pointed out his interest in the historical study about the development of the languages of north-east Asia (section 1.1.), and his wide interest in the many languages geographically widespread in this area (section 1.2.). His attitude toward the study of languages is always rigid and with wide view. I described his attitude toward the study through the following points: diachronic analysis on the correspondences of two consonants in the middle of words (section 1.3.1.), elaborate analysis in morphology (section 1.3.2.), challenging hypotheses on the historical relationship between Altaic languages and Japanese (section 1.3.3.) and his respect for ethnology (section 1.3.4.). In section 2, firstly I introduced his works on Uilta (one of the Tungusic languages) which consists of the dictionary, the grammar and the texts (section 2.1.). Especially I emphasized the value and the importance of his texts. Secondary, I examined his concrete contribution on the genetic problems in the Tungusic languages (section 2.2.1.) and on the typological and contrastive study among the languages of north Asia (in section 2.2.2.).
