Bloom of Emiliania huxleyi (Prymnesiophyceae) in the western South Atlantic Ocean

A monospecific bloom of the coccolithophorid Emiliania huxleyi (Lohmann) Hay & Mohler (Prymnesiophyceae) was detected off Rio de La Plata at 36°S and 54°W in November 1989. The cell densities observed were up to 6×105 cells I−1. This is the first record of a bloom of E.huxleyi in the area.
