Summary:The karyotypes of the peregrine, prairie, and gyrfalcons are reported for the first time. The peregrine and prairie falcon karyotypes appear to be identical, whereas the gyrfalcon has an additional two pairs of chromosomes and appears to have a karyotype similar to the lanner. This indicates a closer relationship between the prairie and peregrine falcon than previously believed. This also implies that the male hybrid of the peregrine and prairie falcon should be fertile.
