Summary:The frequency response function of the spawning stock biomass is calculated for twelve exploited fish stocks. It is assumed that the source of external perturbations is a variable, uncorrelated recruitement and that other demographic parameters are known, and are constant. The results indicate that in general most variance of the spawning stock is at long periods of over 20years. For some stocks, the St Lawrence mackerel, Arcto-Norwegian cod and North-East Arctic haddock, intermediate peaks are seen. These seem to be associated with high density dependence or moderately high density dependence and a long delay to maturity. A simple model is first used to help interpret the results.
