Description
Summary:AIM: the aim of this dissertation is to contribute to the scientific knowledge on the long-term (decade and more) changes in the thermohaline characteristics of the marine environment. Because of their high heat capacity, seas and oceans store very large amounts of heat that slowly release them into the atmosphere, acting thus as climate regulators. Therefore, improving our knowledge about the changes of the marine hydrological characteristics is important for understanding the climate change. AREA OF STUDY: is the Mediterranean Sea, an area of great scientific interest due to its connection to the North Atlantic Ocean, which is a key component of global warming circulation and the global climate. METHODOLOGY: i) A high-resolution climatic atlas of temperature and salinity from historical oceanographic in situ data was computed using the Data Interpolating Variational Analysis (DIVA) method. ii) A range of climatic indices such as temperature, salinity, heat and salt content anomalies were computed in order to study the long-term and climatic changes of the Mediterranean Sea. RESULTS: The new Mediterranean climatic atlas is an improved new product, especially in coastal areas, and reveals in greater detail the hydrological characteristics of the area and the long-term changes of these characteristics. Temperature and salinity differences from the average climatic reference values were used to estimate the changes in the heat and salt content of the Mediterranean Sea to estimate whether the Mediterranean is warming and its salt content is increasing. The results of the analysis show that in a basin scale, the area for the period 1950-2015 is warming up and becoming more salty.
