It’s not uncommon during research to come across the dilemma of whether politics follows economy or vice versa. This however is a pseudo-dilemma, due to their deep interconnection. Categorization of the inability to manage and mitigate climate change as a threat greater than weapons of mass destruction, is indicative of how important developments are. The environment, geopolitics and geoeconomy of the Arctic on the one hand are in flux, while on the other they are the main parameters of its course and it is due to this reason that they are reviewed separately. The Arctic is a region which includes so diverse challenges that it’s impossible to approach it under a sole scope. Geopolitics is offering the most suitable lens because it encompasses political, economic, energy, environmental, social as much as historic factors. Soft and hard politics find their most vivid representation and the researcher embarks on a journey full of surprises, unexpected connections and conflicting actor (state and non state) policies. Concern about the future is intense, so that today won’t be defined as the tipping point when mankind should have changed route to prevent a definitive transformation of the international landscape. In order to showcase the importance and complexity of the Arctic an interdisciplinary approach was followed, considering that developments take place at the same time on many levels and fields. It is meaningful to review on the parallel because they do not exist independently, but on the contrary: they form a multilevel nexus, a dynamic system with delicate and precious balances. Geopolitics is the indicated analysis context considering that it uses geography to interpret political developments. States do remain the primary actors of the international system with their ...
