Description
Summary:This thesis concerns the study of Mesozoic and particularly of the Upper Cretaceous carbonate succession, which is a part of the Paxi Zone cropping out near the area of Sami (Central Kephalonia). The main target of the study is to reveal, in every detail, the depositional facies, microfacies, biostratigraphy and palaeoenviroments of the carbonate succession during Upper Cretaceous in Sami area. Detailed sedimentological and palaeontological investigations have been carried out on seven sections and a number of 300 samles were collected. Thin sections were prepared for the samples and they were studied under polar microscopy. The samples were classified using Dunham’s (1965) classification chart. Afterwards, SMF and FZ, after Flügel (1972) and Wilson (1975), were determined. Determination of stratigraphic position of the investigated succession is based on the identification of microfossils assemblages (benthic foraminifera, calcareous algae Dasycladales and Calcareous nannofossil) and on using their taxa as index fossils. In addition, stable isotope analysis and organic carbon analysis were contacted.Seven vertical profiles of the carbonate succession in Sami area were systematically sampled for sedimentological analysis. The petrographic analysis of thin-sections lead to the recognition of eleven Microfacies Types, grouped into five Facies Zones, and their cyclic pattern. The carbonates were deposited in restricted inner platform/ramp environment and are arrange into small-scalle shallowing upward cycles. The diagnostic criteria of the Standard Microfacies indicate the following Facies Zone/ depositional environments: FZ 9 Arid near-coast evaporitic platformsSetting : Open platform, tidal zones and arid coast (supratidal). Lithofacies: SMF-19 Densely laminated bindstone, SMF-20 Laminated stromatolitic bindstones/mudstones, SMF-21 Fenestral packstone and bindstones and SMF-23 Non-laminated micrite and microsparite without fossils FZ 8 Restricted-marine platformSetting: Platform less well connected with the open ...
