Description
Summary:The main objectives of this study are the design of the biostratigraphic zonation, the assessment of the processes and the paleoclimatological-oceanografical conditions that prevailed in the area of Cyprus during the Pliocene-Pleistocene.The Essovouyes-Exovouyes section and the core borehole MP7 on either side of the Troodos mountain range were selected for this study. The sedimentary sequence of the section is about 90 meters thick and is consisting of massive marls, repeated rhythmic sedimentary cycles from homogeneous and laminated marls, sandy marls and marly sands rich in macrofossils and massive fine- to coarse-grained bioclastic calcarenites at the top. The borehole MP7 has penetrated Plio-Pleistocene sediments 130 m thick which consist of massive marls, thick homogeneous marls and medium- to coarse-grained bioclastic calcarenites at the top.One hundred and eleven (111) samples from the section and two hundred thirty five (235) samples from the core were collected for micropaleontological analysis. From the analysis approximately 50 different species of planktonic and 300 species of benthic foraminifera were identified, which contributed significantly to the determination of all the bio-events which led to the construction of the biostratigraphic-chronostratigraphic column and the assessment of the palaeo-environment, of the two study sedimentary sequences. For decoding the palaeofactors which affected both areas, we proceeded to statistical analysis in both planktonic (Principal Component Analysis) and benthic foraminifera (Cluster analysis Type R), the construction of climatic curve and sea surface productivity curve, oxygen (d18O) and carbon (d13C) stable isotope analysis and organic carbon analysis (Corg).Quantitative and qualitative analysis of planktonic foraminifera for the section Essovouyes-Exovouyes revealed thirteen bioevents: (1) the top of Sphaeroidinellopsis acme zone, (2) the first common occurrence of Globorotalia margaritae, (3) the first occurrence of Globorotalia puncticulata, (4) the ...
