The use of pesticides has become a recurrent option all around the world to control rodent outbreaks. Rodenticides may poison non-target species directly – primary poisoning – or indirectly – secondary poisoning. Rodenticides have the capacity to inhibit the reductases, mostly the epoxide reductase, preventing the vitamin K regeneration (which intervenes in the coagulation cascade). By operating as its antagonist, the rodenticides lead to factors II, VII, IX and X of the coagulation cascade not being produced because they are dependent on the previously mentioned vitamin, causing hemorrhages in the animals. From October 2015 to March 2016 29 livers were collected: 21 from Barn Owl (Tyto alba), 4 from Mallard (Anas platyrrynchos), 3 from Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus) and 1 from Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus) and all were tested for the presence of second generation rodenticides (Bromadiolone, Difenacoum and Brodifenacoum). The rate of positives results was 71,43% (n=15) for the Barn Owl and 100% (n=8) for the other species. The use of control measures of these rodenticide substances is extremely important as to avoid the emergence of resistances by the animals which consume them.
