Description
Summary:Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM), a TRMM follow on, launched on February 28, 2014 has been carrying dual frequency precipitation radar (DPR). Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) provides precipitation data gathered from GPM constellation. Imerg is provided with three different time latency as Early Late and Final. All three have the same spatial (0.1 o x 0.1 o ) and temporal (half-hour) resolutions. The main difference is that Early and Late are available after 4 and 14 hours following satellite acquisition, however Final is within a month. Data provided will improve forecasting natural disasters like floods.Aralık, the most eastern district of Iğdır city located on the east border of Türkiye, provides important road connectivity between Türkiye , Azerbaijan, Armenia and Iran. Aralık, lying on a very flat plain of Iğdır city under the skirts of Ağrı Dağı (Mount Ararat), the highest mountain with a 10 km 2 ice cap in Türkiye, is prone to flash floods. Due to its geographic location and micro-climatic characteristics of Aralık and Iğdır city, estimation of flash floods is not easy. The high variable topography poses difficulties in flash flood estimations using numerical weather prediction models. Here, we investigate Aralık flash floods with Early, Late and Final Imerg data. Three different indices, namely constant threshold, Aralık flood index and Cumulative Distribution Functions will be used with each Imerg data and their performances in flood estimations will be compared. The best performance provided by the Imerg data type and index will be used in Aralık flood estimations.
