Summary:May 9, 1861-September 30, 1871 The diary of a soldier in the 13th Illinois Infantry, which was mustered on May 9, 1861 and served in the western theatre of the war. They participated in several skirmishes, small-scale battles in Missouri and Arkansas, and scouting missions. They also played a role in the Vicksburg Campaign; they were at Chickasaw Bluffs, Jackson, and Champion Hill before digging rifle pits in the outskirts of the city during the seige. The account ends after Confederate General Johnston was repulsed and the army moved to Corinth, Mississippi.
