Summary: | Triassic to Middle Jurassic succession; Sassendalen and Kapp Toscana groups. TSE 5: Base Triassic to lower Middle Jurassic – sag basin. The northeastward- and eastward-prograding Early to early Middle Triassic coarser-grained shallow marine sandstones in the western Spitsbergen have petrography, including zircon analysis, affinity to basins on northeast Greenland (Fig. a). The remaining part of the Triassic was dominated by northwestward progradation of a giant delta with drainage from denudation of the Uralian and southeast Fennoscandia (Fig. b). Inversion and up-warping in latest Triassic–Early Jurassic on Spitsbergen was followed by shallow marine to paralic condensed deposits in the Middle Jurassic while the eastern and southeastern part of Svalbard experienced basin subsidence (Figs c and d). |
