Summary:The avian influenza virus is discussed with emphasis on the impact to poultry and possible movement of the highly pathogenic H5N 1 virus to humans. A review is made of the worldwide effects to date of the avian influenza viruses; methods for the viruses to enter recreational waters and sewage are discussed along with disinfection techniques treatment at wastewater plants. Finally methods recommended by USEPA with USDA and others are discussed for handling poultry mortalities. These include: rendering, composting, incineration, and burial.
