| Summary: | The subpopulation of humpback whales that migrates along the coast of Western Australia (Stock D or Antarctic Area Group IV), along with other Southern Ocean stocks, were left severely depleted as a result of commercial whaling during the last century. While several studies have been carried out to ascertain the D Stock's status by way of population dynamics, photo-identification and aerial surveys, there has been no study focussing on this subpopulation in terms of genetics and little is known in terms of its population structure. This thesis aims to define this stock via a thorough, post-whaling investigation of its genetic status and structure. |
