Summary: | The wolf has always been a legendary animal in the collective memory but today, it is a wild mammal at the center of a controversy. The consideration and preservation of wild animals has currently gained a particular importance in our society, and people thanks to notions of genetic diversity and ecology have shown a growing interest for wild fauna and animals' ways of life and behaviors. Taking into account this new context, the Park Alpha, zoological gardens located in the National Park of Mercantour, has chosen to offer the public a direct approach of the wolf, a wild Canidae whose presence remains very debated in the region. It is interesting to notice that the living conditions of the wolves in captivity modify their behaviors and their ways of life, making them much more sensitive to numerous pathologies and more particularly to intestinal parasitism. These risks, linked to the conditions of captivity and of the appropriation of a limited and enclosed territory, can however be partly controlled thanks to strict rules of hygiene and an adapted medical monitoring. Indeed, up to now, the main endoparasites found in wolves showing intestinal parasitism are from the classes of Nematodes and Cestodes, and many molecules are able to fight against these parasites. Nevertheless, the study show a growing importance of another form of intestinal parasitism due to protozoans and bacterial swarming which require a particular treatment in wolves. |
