| Summary: | The shipwreck of La Bourgogne , took place on the 4th of July in 1898 of the Newfoundland coast, was a very well covered maritim disaster. It appalled the French population which demonstrated generosity and solidarity towards the mourning families. The goal of this master thesis was to gather the different articles published in reaction to the catastrophy, in order to question the representations and sensitivity of French people at the end of nineteeth century, towards this collision. What happened ? Was it a recurring event ? What was the reaction of the population ? What was the newspapers influence on the french society ? This study offers to answer this questions. So generaly speaking, this study uses great historiographical approaches such as maritim history, press history and representations history, so as to examine on the reality of this mediatical event.This master thesis is divided in three parts, including nine chapters written with different points of view. The technical, commercial, journalistic, emotionnal and memorial considerations are studed successively to confer at this study a real plurality in its approaches. The bias to render intelligible the circonstances of the shipwreck while considering the stakes sourronding it, was taken. What is more, the articles, in their content and their format, are analysed to draw up the mediatic cover of the disaster. Finally, beyond the simple retranscription, the analysis focuses on nuancing and putting into context the collision of the ship, to identify the ins and outs of the conception of an emotional mediatic event as the shipwreck of La Bourgogne .
