Description
Summary:The French maritime zone is the second largest worldwide thanks to overseas French departement and territories scattered throughout all the oceans. The toothfish fishing is an economic pillar of Reunion Island in the Indian ocean where the fish is landed and exported. The exploitation of the seas is not effortless and fishing is one of the most dangerous occupation in the world. The objective of this study is to calculate the incidence of pathology on board of freezer-longliners operating in the exclusives economics zones around French sub-Antarctic’s islands of Kerguelen, Crozet and Saint-Paul. The criteria used to determine the medical event was derived from the medical report found in the database of the French telemedical assistance service (TMAS). 314 seafarers have been included in the study during 3 years from august 2011.61% were French and 39% non-European foreigners. The incidence have been 19.1 (IC95%:15.1-24.2) pathologies onboard for 1000 seafarers exposed per year. 82% of cases were dealt with on board. The harsh conditions of work and the remoteness of the fishing zone justifies a quality service of telemedecine. The study confirms the necessity of preventive medicine practices and fitness and the need for specific training of seafarers to relevant health issues according to international recommendations.
