| Summary: | This compilation of the air task organizations of the Atlantic Ocean Areas is believed to be reasonably complete and accurate. The basic source of information has been the operation plans and orders on file in Naval Records and Library, but data on the movement of units between the issuance of operation plans has come from war diaries, base, squadron and wing histories. In many cases where the organisation of the command in a given area has been intricate and confusing, administrative histories were consulted and were found most helpful in clarifying the command relationships. This was particularly true in the case of the Eastern Sea Frontier. The organization of U.S. Naval Forces in Europe is incomplete for the early days of the war because very little information was available in war diaries, no operation plans could be found, and no administrative history had been submitted. lhen the sections on the sea frontiers, European waters and the South Atlantic were completed, it was found that the activities of the escort carrier task forces, and of air operations from Newfoundland, Greenland and Iceland had not been included in any of the designated areas. Therefore, a section on the U.S. Fleet was added, giving the various operation plans, but footnoting only the activities that had not already been covered in the area treatment.
