Summary:Simple countermeasures against passive (thermal) infrared intrusion detection systems (IDSs) and thermal imagers were tested in winter by U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers working with personnel of the U. S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL). Under certain site conditions, the countermeasures were very effective, enabling intruders to pass undetected by the infrared IDSs or unnoticed by observers viewing thermal imagery of the site. An awareness of the interplay between environment, countermeasure, and sensor system is crucial both in identifying when a sensor system is vulnerable to countermeasures and in selecting the appropriate countermeasure. This paper explains which environmental factors during the Special Forces/CRREL intrusions determined the success or failure of a countermeasure. It also predicts the general effectiveness of similar countermeasures as a function of the operating environment of a thermal infrared sensor system.
