Description
Summary:This report will present the state of knowledge of internal-wave effects from the point of view of low-frequency sonar systems, and will make recommendations to the sonar-system designer and operator as to when to expect internal-wave effects to become important. It will also explain where oceanographic measurement and analysis are needed to determine the limits on sonar-system design and performance that are due to internal waves. The calculations in this report are based on the universal Garrett-Munk spectrum, with differences in different parts of the ocean arising from the behavior of different water masses.
