Description
Summary:The Center for Earth Sciences of the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM) continued the fundamental study of the active microwave behavior of Arctic sea ice. Efforts focused on two major activities -- the characterization of microwave properties of sea ice and related modeling activities. The microwave signature study also included the comparison of active and passive microwave data, relating the physical properties of sea ice through laboratory and field studies to SAR signatures, and the study of the capability of polarimetric SAR to improve geophysical property retrievals. We have also made a major contribution to the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Sea Ice American Geophysical Union Microwave Remote Sensing of Sea Ice Monograph 68.
