Description
Summary:This report summarizes the research which has been carried out in conjunction with the development of a comprehensive new seismic yield estimation system (YES) for underground nuclear explosions. Specifically, it provides a detailed description of the final version of YES which has been implemented at the ARPA Center for Seismic Studies (CSS) to estimate seismic yields of explosions at the Shagan River and Novaya Zemlya test sites of the former Soviet Union. In its current configuration, the YES encompasses a database of more than 15,000 digital seismograms recorded at stations of the USAEDS, GDSN, CDSN and IRIS networks from explosions at these two test sites. For both test areas, information regarding the explosion source environment is presented to the analyst in the context of SPOT(TM) satellite images of the sites, together with associated surface and subsurface geologic information and DMA topographic data.
