Summary:The acoustic properties of sea ice are inherently important to studies of sound propagation and scattering in the Arctic. The richness of the acoustic behavior of sea ice stems from its saline nature. In particular, sea ice is the result of the solidification of a sub-eutectic melt. This accounts for the high porosity layer at the ice/water interface, known as the skeletal layer. The high porosity makes measurements of the acoustic properties in the skeletal layer extremely sensitive to perturbations. Because this layer is a few centimeters thick, it is of primary importance for modeling the scattering of high frequency (above 10 kHz) acoustic energy from the underside of the ice.
