Description
Summary:The Contract Archeology Program, Center for American Archeology conducted an archeological survey of six interior drainage ditches within the Eldred and Spankey Drainage and Levee District, Greene County, Illinois. The survey was designed to locate surface cultural deposits 38 m on either side of the drainage ditches. Field techniques included pedestrian walkover and examination of exposed drainage ditch profiles. Two archeological sites were identified. The Twin Ditch site was newly discovered. The Voiles site was previously identified during a 1977 survey of the Eldred and Spankey district. Additional archeological investigations are recommended at the Twin Ditch site prior to any construction at that location. The testing would determine the eligibility of the site for nomination onto the National Register of Historic Places.
