Summary:The elastic moduli of sea ice are determined from high frequency velocity measurements made on small samples extracted from the ice canopy. The experimental apparatus for determining the velocities is described and was designed to allow quick in-field measurement. The experimental procedure included measurement of the ice sample salinity and temperature and the results given here allow prediction of elastic moduli from knowledge of these more easily obtainable physical parameters. The elastic moduli determined are those appropriate for a specialized Biot model in which the ice is viewed as a closed pore isotropic material. With the Biot model put forth here, seven parameters are needed to predict acoustic velocities, all of which are easily interpreted physically and are given here in terms of their salinity and temperature dependences.
